CRASH!!!!

While watching TV last night I heard a loud thud outside. I went to investigate and I found a bird on the ground lying on its side. It hit the glass wall of the house. The poor little thing was knocked out cold. Its left eye was closed as it had hit the wall the most.

I picked it up; put it on the patio table and gave it some water. It sat there motionless, but now conscious. My husband suggested sprinkling it with water to waken it up. I did that with a spray bottle, but it just sat there. I left it for a while, and then when I came back I found it had vomited.

It was getting late, soon it will get dark and I'm afraid that if it's still unable to fly, a raccoon, or a cat would get to it and...gulp...eats it up. Poor thing, it would be defenseless, a sitting duck to all those predators.

Okay, little bird, here's my phone and call your mom.
It's getting late and you're not home yet. She's now worried.

I took a wicker basket to put it in; to hang it up at one of the pergola beams so it would be out of reach of a prowler. Perhaps by tomorrow morning it would feel much better, regain its strength and it could fly. When I picked it up it started to struggle; it walked a bit. I put it back in the basket, but it hopped and walked to the edge of the table. When I turned my back it was gone. It had managed to fly...and I just hope it's strong enough to get away from those predators lurking in my backyard.

Hi! Thanks for dropping by! The name of the flower you're asking is Lotus! Took that shot in Thailand. :)

OMG poor little one! Cute story...with the suggested phone call. Why did it crash on the glss? Could it be fleeing from another predator? That viscious cat...maybe...who has that taste for little helpless birdlings? What a nightingale heart you have trying to nurse it. Reminds me of that bird we discovered in our living room one evening. In its fright at our sudden coming into the scene it flew wildly smacked into our mirrored wall mistaking it for open space. Was knocked cold too. We opened the door as it recovered and flew out the door. We practically shooed it towards the door! I was as frightened of her as she was of me!

Hi Mari....! Reading your comment makes me feel so thankful na wala kaming earthquakes dito sa australia ha-ha....! It would be a big desaster kung magsibagsakan sa floor ang lahat ng fish tanks ko, i can't hardly imagine ang magiging reaction ko if ever na mangyari yun....! Anyways, my tanks are all fastened tightly to the walls naman kasi minsan ay may pagkabulag din ako kaya nababangga ko accidentally he-he....! Mabuti na yung prepared, and besides, they are so sturdy on their wooden base that the walls will fall first during earthquakes before the tanks will....! =D

dc, it must've thought that was open space--no glass. It happens all the time. Then one time a bird came in my living room through the chimney flue...ack, it flew around like crazy until I opened the door and chased it out of the house.

Thanks for coming.

pepe, you're lucky not to have earthquakes in your area. You won't have to worry about your aquariums toppling down your floor. Good idea, fastened them to the wall.

Thanks for your visit.

nona, nakalaboy ka ngayon. Good. Sige, tuloy ang ligaya.

Salamat sa dalaw mo.

tina, I can't just leave the bird there right by my door. I'd feel guilty. :-( I need to redeem myself, after losing two hummingbird babies.

Thanks for your visit. :-)

the poor little sparrow! You're wonderful, Mari, I am sure the little bird knows you care. oh and the cell phone, that was so sweet. and the thought of the basket!

hello Mari
perhaps you can help the birds with hawk silhouettes made from black plastic sheets and hang them outside windows by a chain or rope from an overhanging.
Make sure bird feeders and other attracting objects (like birdbaths and plants) are either one foot away or more than 10 feet away from any window. If attractions are very close to windows, birds often cannot build up enough momentum to injure themselves should they hit windows. Alternatively, by placing attractions 10 feet away or more, birds are less likely to get close enough for a collision.
Hang ribbons or other material strips no more than two inches apart on the outside of windows along each window's entire length.
Recent evidence shows that collisions with glass may be a major source of avian mortality that's widely overlooked.
Experts believe that about 100 million birds die each year in collisions with buildings and skyscrapers in the U.S. and Canada alone.

jeannie hizon, I love to hear them chirp. Don't you?

Thanks for your visit.

guild rez, I'll give your suggestion a try. I don't have a bird feeder, or bird bath in my yard, but I have a pergola covered with grape vine in my patio and they love to go there; they build their nests there.

Thank you so much.
